# Make your first request

This walks through your first successful call: initializing a payment.

1. Get your **public key** from Settings → API Keys (see [Authentication](/startbutton-product-api/getting-started/authentication.md)).
2. Send a `POST` request to `{{baseurl}}/transaction/initialize`.

3. A successful call returns an authorization URL for the customer to complete payment.
4. Once the customer completes (or abandons) the transaction, you'll receive a webhook — see [Overview & Verification](/startbutton-product-api/webhooks/overview-and-verification.md).
